The Indian women’s hockey team launched its FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26 campaign with a spirited comeback victory, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat the United States 3-2 in their opening Pool A match at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, on Monday.

Ranked ninth in the world, India showcased remarkable resilience after a difficult start against the 12th-ranked United States. Deepika emerged as the star performer with two crucial goals, while Navneet Kaur scored the decisive winner to complete India’s dramatic turnaround.

The United States made an aggressive start and took the lead in the fourth minute when Ashley Sessa found the net through a field goal. The Americans extended their advantage just three minutes later as Madeleine Zimmer successfully converted a penalty corner, putting India under significant early pressure.

Trailing 2-0, India gradually settled into the contest and began creating opportunities in attack. Their efforts were rewarded in the second quarter when drag-flick specialist Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute to reduce the deficit and revive India’s challenge.

Despite repeated attempts from the Americans to find an equaliser, India successfully protected their narrow lead throughout the final two quarters to secure a memorable victory and begin their FIH Women’s Nations Cup campaign on a winning note.

The result moved India to second place in Pool A and underlined the team’s determination and fighting spirit, as they recovered from a two-goal deficit to claim a crucial opening-match triumph against the United States.
